How to Choose the Right Fence for Your Home

by | Fences

When you’re wondering how to choose the right fence for your home, it’s important to remember that “right” depends on a bunch of different things. There is no one right fence for everyone.

Consider the following:

  • What is the primary purpose of your fence?
  • What is your budget?
  • Are there any city or HOA regulations to consider?

At Juno Construction, we recommend clients take a walk around their property line while considering the above.

In this blog, we’ll give a little bit of info on how to choose the right fence based on those three factors. When you’re ready, though, it’s important to call an experienced contractor. They’ll be able to help you turn your dreams into reality better than you ever could by DIY-ing it.

Why you want a fence matters.

Why do you want a fence? The answer to that question, more than any other, will decide the type that works best for you.

Some of the more popular reasons for fence installation are:

  • privacy
  • aesthetic value
  • wind protection, and
  • protection for your family and pets

There’s a good chance you don’t want a fence for only one reason. That’s okay, too.

Get safety and functionality with a privacy fence.

Privacy is a number one concern for a lot of people looking to add fencing to their property. Fortunately, there are several options.

Brick or stone will obviously block the view from a busy street or neighboring yard. They’re stable enough to last for decades and add a nice, rough-hewn look.

But if you want something that feels more “classic,” you can also go with vinyl, aluminum, or wood. The most important consideration with these kinds of materials is the gap between slats — if there’s little to no space, it’s going to be almost as private as the thickest stone wall.

Increase the beauty of your property with quality fencing.

It works like a stylish frame for your property, enhancing the visual appeal and adding symmetry and definition to the landscape.

Your choice here really depends on the kind of look you prefer. A wrought iron fence is attractive and has a definite curb appeal, but a wooden fence has its charm, too. It’s also helpful to match the architecture of your home.

Protect from the elements with a wind-proof fence.

If wind protection is your goal, you’ll want a fence that’s tall enough to shield, without blocking the sun. And like a privacy fence, you’ll want either a solid surface or slats with small or no gaps.

Also keep in mind that you don’t need to protect your entire yard from wind, just the areas where you’re likely to be spending time. It’s fine to have taller fencing around one area, like a patio, while keeping it lower everywhere else.

Keep family and pets safe with a security fence

A security fence doesn’t need to be electric and topped with razor wire. A sturdy material like aluminum or vinyl is hard to mess with and just as importantly gives you peace of mind.

A good security fence needs to be at least six feet high. The goal is to keep potential trespassers out and pets and children in.

Think about your budget.

The cost of your fence will depend on

  • labor
  • size, and
  • materials

Saving money in the long run isn’t as simple as cutting the cost of each, though. A cheap fence may cost you more in the long run if you have to continue spending on upkeep.

We recently wrote another blog post covering the materials available for each budget. You can read it here. Your budget is a close second to functionality if you want to know how to choose the right fence for your home.

Consider laws and regulations.

Here in Texas, there are no laws about the type of material you can use for your fence, but there is a height limit for residential properties: eight feet. If you belong to an HOA, there may be stricter regulations about the kinds of materials you can use.

Now that you know how to choose the right fence, it may be time to talk to a contractor. A fencing contractor can help you find a fence that achieves your goals while staying on budget and in line with regulations—even if it means being a little creative.
