If you’ve been looking into the best shingles to protect your home from a hail storm, you might’ve come across the terms “Class 3” and “Class 4.” These are classifications that rate a roof’s ability to withstand impact from hail and high winds. Basically, the difference between the classes is this: Class 3 shingles can withstand hail that is 1.75” in diameter, while Class 4 shingles withstand 2” hail. Class 4 also better protects against wind damage.
So, if your area gets a lot of storms, like here in North Texas, the decision between Class 3 and 4 shingles can have a real impact on your roof and home.
Most North Texas homes use Class 3 shingles.
They’re reliable and affordable, making them the standard choice for builders in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. And while they’re not quite as durable as class 4, they’re still solid.
Class 4 shingles are tougher.
“4” is a designation for the highest strength shingles, or the highest “impact resistant” shingles available. Usually, that’s because they’re thicker or use specialized materials that protect against high-speed strikes from hail and other objects.
Class 4 shingles also last longer.
Class 3 shingles typically last 20 to 25 years with proper maintenance. Class 4 shingles, on the other hand, can last more than 30 years.
But they will cost more.
Compared to Class 3 shingles, Class 4 shingles come at a higher price. While the upfront investment is higher, the added toughness can translate into fewer repairs. Some insurance companies will also give you a discount for using them.
Remember: North Texas hail hits hard.

As recently as June 2025, there were reports of 4.25-inch hail in Armstrong County. Here in Fort Worth, we’ll regularly see hailstones of 1 to 2.5 inches, the impacts of which crack shingles and leave roofs vulnerable to leaks.
Winds can hit hurricane force.
In recent years, gusts in our region of Texas have regularly topped 80 miles per hour. In fact, in August of 2025, the wind at DFW Airport reached 89 mph. That’s almost in the range of a category 2 hurricane.
Class 3 shingles are more likely to tear off in high wind, exposing your home, while Class 4 shingles perform better in intense storms.
