What’s the Best Exterior Paint?

by | renovation

The best exterior house paint should do two things:

  1. Look good
  2. Stand up to the elements.

Of course, you want your house to be attractive. But whether you’re painting as part of a much-needed exterior renovation, painting or restoring highly visible exterior materials like siding, or simply want to give your home a fresh new color, you also need paint that resists wear and stands up to the heat.

Today, we’ll look at the best types of exterior paint for wood siding and other materials. I’ll also share some tips on the best brands and colors that last the longest.

Acrylic paint is typically the best choice for exterior wood siding.

There are three types of paint used for exterior wood siding:

  • Acrylic
  • Latex
  • Oil-based

Oil-based paint isn’t used as much on wood exteriors these days because of environmental regulations and advancements in other types. So, that leaves acrylic and latex paint.

We recommend acrylic, especially if you’re painting wood. It expands and contracts with wood. Acrylic also resists mildew and is easy to clean.

Latex has its uses, such as when you want a paint that’s cheaper and easier to clean, but in most situations, acrylic is better.

Acrylic also works on brick.

If you’re painting a brick exterior, make sure to choose a masonry-specific paint. It gives you a durable coating that protects porous surfaces.

Durability and heat resistance matter.

In hot climates, like here in Texas, UV protection is essential. Look for paints labeled “UV-resistant” or “fade-resistant.” These formulas have a few ingredients, usually titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, that absorb UV radiation and keep color from fading.

Trusted brands hold up over time.

We’ve talked about general qualities to look for in your paint (acrylic, UV-resistant). Now let’s get into specifics.

As of 2025, brands like PPG, Behr, Sherwin-Williams, and Behr lead the pack.

PPG Permanizer is an acrylic that’s known for its longevity and color retention. It won’t fade or peel.

Benjamin Moore Aura also offers high quality and durability, though it’s on the expensive side. Behr Premium Plus offers great coverage and mildew resistance at a cheaper price point.

Painter skill matters, too.

Hire a professional contractor to paint the exterior of your home. They know how to prep the surface and give you proper coverage. You’ll get a more polished look that holds up over the years.

Bright colors fade faster.

It’s your home, so you need to choose a color you’re happy with. Still, there are a couple of guidelines to keep in mind.

Bright reds absorb the most light, causing them to fade quickly. Similarly, vibrant blues and yellows are more likely to lose their color. Unless you absolutely have your heart set on a bright look, go with something else.

Choose a neutral color for less heat.

Light-colored neutrals aren’t just more fade-resistant; they help keep your house cool.

Lighter surfaces reflect the heat away from a home, keeping it cooler. That can mean a lower energy bill in the summer months. If you’re concerned with longevity and energy efficiency, go with a light neutral or earthy tone.
